Abnormal Bleeding Q&A

What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding refers to any type of uterine bleeding that falls outside of what’s considered normal. A normal menstrual cycle runs 21 to 35 days with about seven days of bleeding.

Signs and symptoms of abnormal bleeding include:

  • Bleeding in between periods
  • Bleeding during or after sex
  • Heavy bleeding that disrupts your life
  • Menstrual cycle longer than 35 days
  • Menstrual cycle shorter than 21 days
  • Irregular periods
  • Not having your period for three or more months
  • Bleeding after menopause

You can develop abnormal bleeding at any age. However, it's not unusual to have an irregular period when you first start menstruating or during the months or years leading up to menopause.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding is expected during certain life stages. However, there are health conditions that might cause changes in your menstrual cycle, such as:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Polyps
  • Bleeding disorder
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Cancer

Birth control may also cause abnormal bleeding, such as bleeding in between periods or heavy bleeding.

When should I see a professional about abnormal bleeding?

You should schedule an appointment at Federal Way Women’s Health Care if your abnormal bleeding is sudden and severe or an ongoing problem.

The team takes a patient-centered approach to care, and there’s no wrong time to schedule an appointment when you have concerns about your health. The team reviews your symptoms, gynecological history, and performs a physical and pelvic exam.

They may also run lab work to check for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or hormonal changes. Additionally, the team’s registered diagnostic medical sonographer may do an ultrasound test to evaluate your reproductive organs and look for gynecological issues that might explain your abnormal bleeding.

What are the treatments for abnormal bleeding?

The team at Federal Way Women’s Health Care customizes your abnormal bleeding treatment based on the underlying cause. Treatment may include:

  • Hormonal birth control
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for perimenopause or menopause
  • Tranexamic acid (medication for heavy menstrual bleeding)
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists (reduce fibroids)
  • Treatment for an STD

Federal Way Women’s Health Care also performs endometrial ablation for heavy menstrual bleeding in women with no future pregnancy plans. Gynecological surgery is also sometimes recommended to treat conditions like fibroids or endometriosis.
